A while ago I got to meet and work with a great animator called Andreea Stan. She was working on a short film for the Roundhouse about her childhood and we talked about poetry/animation/storytelling and how we're both interested in combining them. We agreed that we'd try working on a piece together if we could find something that'd fit.
I don't often talk about it, but my Mum was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years back. She was told at the time that she only had 5 years tops to live. Thanks to the incredible treatment she's received from the NHS she's been through remission and there's no sign of the cancer returning. We're all really relieved and proud of her for fighting through it- she's been so strong. the whole thing was really painful for our family to go through and I still think about the day of her diagnosis and how much it shook us all.
Anyway, I wrote a poem about it a while back and how I felt when she phoned me about it. I always thought it was a bit of a messy piece, to be honest, and not one to share online but Andreea really liked it and asked whether I'd like to work with her on making a video out of it. she's been great to work with and I love her animation style. Anyway, here's the piece we came up with. It's called 'Lump.' Unsurprisingly, it's sort of dedicated to my Mum.
I loved working with Andreea on this. I hope you like it - it's not like my other stuff, is it? I find it odd writing things like this, but I'm glad that it's out there. If you want to find out more about Breast Cancer Awareness Month, you can do so here.
